Crafting Britishness: Celebrating Tradition in Country Hotel Design

The country hotel has enjoyed something of a renaissance in recent years, as more travellers seek the tranquillity and ease of domestic rural getaways. The most successful of these celebrate the splendour of the heritage buildings which they occupy, while recreating the intimate familiarity of the ‘home’ and providing refined sanctuary.

However, above the exquisitely designed accommodations, amenities and outdoor spaces expected of a country retreat, what makes this typology of hotel so appealing is the connection they offer to place and nature.

Guests desire to feel immersed in an idyllic rural scene, one that is quintessentially British and rooted in tradition. Creating authentic experiences to meet these wants requires designers to employ a deep understanding of what ‘Britishness’ means in a particular locale. Understanding the cultural heritage, identity, and ecology unique to a setting based on study and a profound understanding of local nuances.

Honouring the architectural vernacular of a region is essential, whether in regard to restoration projects or new offerings, to ensure a harmony with the surrounding environment. From the choice of local materials and craftsmanship to creating spaces that connect the indoor to the outdoor. Services and activities offer opportunities to further integrate visitors within their context and the local community, such as farm-to-table dining, agricultural activities, and classes with artisans.

Thus, a hotel situated in the picturesque pastures of the Cotswolds must offer a distinct experience to that surrounded by the ancient woodland of the New Forest or the windswept hills of the Yorkshire Dales.

Our design of The Farmyard at The Newt involved the meticulous renovation of a historic farm hamlet into a collection of hotel suites, a restaurant, pool, and spa – combining local craftsmanship and traditional forms and materials with contemporary design. The result is a blend of heritage, elegance and comfort that feels distinctly of Somerset.

By offering authentic experiences rooted in local culture and tradition such as at The Newt in Somerset, country hotels have a unique opportunity to draw visitors from around the world. Writing a new chapter in British hospitality – one that is as timeless as it is contemporary.
