Years ago I bought a John Piper artist’s proof of San Moise. Not the most beautiful church in Venice, less recognisable than most of the iconic sights, but it’s still has captured the interests of some great artists. I always look at the façade when in Venice (it’s on one of the ‘main highways’ linking San Marco to the Academia bridge) but actually prefer my lithographs!
The Pinoteca di Brera is one of my favourite museums and should be on any visit list to Milan. The rooms of 20C Italian art are worth seeing, Filippo De Pisis’ 1930s painting of San Moise continues my theme. There is a grey, misty and silvery light in Venice and this painting captures that perfectly”
